The other 3 tanks are viable and can combat mechanics on specific fights very well, but those listed are top tier and the 3 unlisted are playable yet a slight increase in difficulty for the tanks themselves and the healers trying to keep them alive.

The five kinds of tanks available in World of Warcraft are:

Protection Paladin, Feral Druid (Bear), Protection Warrior, Death

Knight, and Brewmaster Monk. For solo play your pet may tank for

you if you are a Hunter or Warlock, but they can't actually think

for themselves.

In 5mans and raids, all four types are fine, and there's hardly

a difference in effectiveness.

In a raid situation, the strengths and weaknesses of certain

tanks come to light. Note that there is not a 'best tank' per se,

because classes achieve the same thing through a very different

play style. Instead, check, which type of tank fits you

personally.

Protection Warrior

The 'allrounder' tank, the warrior used to be the only tanking

class in the game, and it shows in their buildup. They are

plate-wearers with shields, and build up massive amounts of

mitigation. Their threat is caused by bleeds, thunderclaps and

shield bashes. They have a few cooldowns in case things go

downhill, but they rely less on them than Death Knights do.

Protection Paladin

Paladins have very strong AoE abilities, and are the masters of

blocking with their shield. They wear Plate armor, and have among

their talents the ability to cheat death once every few minutes.

Paladins are also very good at picking up and kiting adds, such as

in the Rotface fight.

Bear Druid

A Druid with bear talents is a massive wall of muscle and fur;

they can wear leather armor only, but they gain more armor from it

than other characters. They can Dodge, but they cannot parry or

block since weapons and shields are meaningless to a bear.

Bear Druids make good soakers as well, such as offtanks on Blood

Queen Lana'thel.

Death Knight

Death Knights use their runeblades to parry attacks, and can

dodge them as well. They too are plate-wearers, but do not use

shields. Death Knights are cooldown-based tanks, meaning they are

not very strong unless they have one of their special abilities

ready to be used. This makes the Death Knight good for people who

can plan ahead well. They are also very strong against Magical

attacks.

Brewmaster Monks

In Mists of Pandaria, the Brewmaster monk will be added, whose

style of tanking seems to fall between a Druid and a Death Knight

in that they rely on Agility and have a lot of cooldowns to

use.

Druids are awesome! They can tank, heal AND dps! Very versatile class and very easy to learn. Feral Druids for the win.

It was the class that made me play WoW and I do not regret choosing her as my main. The fact that you can change to suit so many roles is very handy. As well as having their own fast swimming and flying forms, battle resurrection, stealth in cat form and are just so much fun.

I think Dk should b the top because while I'm trying to kill Blood Dk on PVP battle with my druid I died like 18 times and he is only level 85 an I'm level 89. The most annoying class is Blood Dk they keep absorbing the damage and spells an they summon gauls while I'm in low hp

Death Knights are the strongest because they can tank, use magic and have the best weapons!

I have a level 85 Blood Death Knight and I am nearly invincible! DK for the win!

Warriors are great. They do tons of damage and are great at shutting others down be it slows or canceling spells.

They're pretty OP, man.

High burst dps and constant new spells as you level will ensure you never get bored power levelling. I recommend playing fire for the most fun as it is unpredictable. Sometimes crazily OP and sometimes 'DIRT'.

I have a warlock in level 90. MOP. It is the best class I ever played because I love summoning pets in BG's. It's so wonderful playing WOW and playing Locks. I have over 90k gold and I spent it all on my gear so I will not ever get rid of WOW in my head - Jahed1234

I originally played WoW back in Vanilla all the way through because, then eventually took a break until Cata. Shaman was one of the classes I had always wanted to try out but never got a chance to back in my because days. Its been a couple months rolling a Pandaren Shaman and honestly, I think the class is a bit underrated.
It has GREAT versatility, in that you can do either melee, ranged damage, or healing. You're a HIGHLY utility centered class, as you can have many totems for various situations, travel faster in a wolf form, and get get to use a variety of weapons such as maces, staves, axes, shields to name a few. Being able to wear chain armor also adds to suitability, which is a nice bonus when questing.
I think anyone looking for a versatile class that doesn't want to go Druid, won't be disappointed

Screw DPS and healing. Shaman is the class with the best lore and abilities in terms of concept. I mean, what kind of person doesn't want to have the power to control the raw power of the elements?

Most fun class in the game and it's my main it may not do a lot of dps but it sure is the most fun and that's the point of the game

Topping the charts with a hunter is a piece of cake, just learn to constantly move around your enemies in battle and you will dominate! One of the easiest classes to solo, and pvp with! Just learn to move more fluidly and you will understand.

Hunters are great. Not only do they barely die because their pet takes almost all the damage They kill fast also because of their pet. It also is very practical that it can track different creatures and invisibles. I also like druid but I feel everyone has one and its no longer original and it it gets a bit boring after a while if you ask me.

I'm sorry, rogue is not for everyone, me especially, I literally fall asleep while playing it, even if I was wide awake 5 minutes ago, and they annihilate me in pvp, so frustrating

I have had a shadow priest for 15 years. honestly at one point back in cata I did more damage than all the raid combined. Since then they have been nerfed quite a bit but still are viable in both pve and pvp. Walking death as I like to think of them

Always have one of the best healing specs. Shadow almost always good in pvp, and sometimes pve.

Priests can heel, dps, and tank (only in self-formed group though). They're able to shield anyone from damage and/or bad magic/poison (discipline priest), heal a tank or a whole group/ half a raid group at one time (holy priest), or do considerable damage and heal themselves at the same time (shadow priest). Other than the fact that some of the better spells take time to cast the priest is basically unbeatable.

A class with varieties. You can Shield/protect, heal, purify or do a lot of dps. Spriest is also easy to level, very cool and fun class.

The Contenders

Monk Tanks if you know how to play them can take massive groups on unlike that of a warrior or paladin

You guys are going to see monk rise to the top few of this list because they are progressing every day

It's Very good if your a Windwalker because your glyphs and your powers are very strong. So if you want to choose this class, the damaging is best

Since WW monks has touch of karma plus all those self-heals and the burst I would put the mon probably 3rd place since they are so unbalanced.

Demon hunters are over powered, at least in vengeance. they have tons of health and are able to heal themselves, I accidentally pulled the first boss of black rook hold before the healer got their me and a pally soloed the boss.

Wow. Legion Fury Warriors are incredible. In the beta, they do insane damage and play very fluidly. They are incredible in PvE and PvP, but they are also unarguably cool and fun.
